Feedback Loops

In email marketing, there is a mechanism called Feedback Loops in which the recipient’s mailbox provider returns a recipient complaint notification to the originating sender. The process initiates when a recipient of your email decides to hit the spam button. But for this process to take place, the sender needs to register their email address with ISPs provided loops, where the ISPs will forward the complaint. The process of FBL handling enables MailCarry to access and read the inbox registered with ISPs provided loops, read the spam notices and then process/ flag those recipients within MailCarry list(s).

How can I view and manage FBL handlers in MailCarry?

The first among the above-mentioned questions are briefly answered in the opening paragraph of this article. How do you set-up the FBL handler account is discussed in the following part of the article? If you already have read the article on Bounce Handler configuration, you’ll easily configure the FBL handler also, as both the processes are similar. Click “Feedback Loops” under “Setup” on the main navigation and then click the button “Add FBL Handler” on the resulting page.


Set the new FBL handler account as active or inactive. Only accounts with active status would be able to process and flag the spam complaints within MailCarry.

FBL Email

Provide the email address using which you’ve registered for the ISPs provided loops to keep the reference of the FBL handler account. You would later identify the FBL handler with this reference.


It refers to the method that will be used to access the inbox registered to receive the complaints. There are two options to select one between IMAP and POP. Both offer a way to connect to the mail server and read complaint/abuse notices. For most of the users, IMAP works well, but if you would need to connect through POP it is available as well.


Provide the hostname to connect to the network. It can be localhost if the FBL email is hosted on the same server, can be the IP address or physical path i.e. to the server.


This is simply the username of the email inbox that you’ll set to receive the ISPs forwarded complaint notices. Make sure you will provide a correct and complete username to access and read the inbox.

The field is mandatory and has to be filled with the port IMAP/POP will use to connect. There are some largely used ports listed in the following area.


Two optional security fields followed after the port information.

  • Encryption– If the connection to the server needs encryption? You’ve got the option to choose the type of encryption required. If not, you can continue with the first option “None”.
  • Validate Cert– If it requires to validate the security certificate to authenticate the connection, choose the option as Yes, and if it doesn’t require validating certificates, then proceed with the option “No”.

Delete after Processing

A way to automatically delete the complaint emails from the FBL registered inbox after processing them within MailCarry. Selecting the option as “Yes” will empty the FBL inbox after the complainants are being flagged within MailCarry. If you want to keep the complaints in the designated inbox and want to manually review/manage them, just leave this option as “No”.

Click “Save” to save preference and get back to the view page, click “Save and “Add New” to save these preferences and refresh the fields for a new entry, click “Validate” for the system to try establishing the connection to the bounce inbox to see if the information is correct. And click “Close” to simply close the process without saving.

View and Manage FBL Handler Accounts

The resulting page after clicking “Feedback Loops” will display a table listing all available FBL handler accounts. Here is the set of information you can grab from the view table with regard to every FBL handler saved in the system.

  • ID- Every account is assigned a unique ID
  • FBL Email – The identification reference of the FBL email you’ve provided while setting the FBL handler.
  • Host– The host (path) to the FBL
  • Method – Which method between IMAP and POP the FBL handler account is set to use for accessing the mail server and read the complaint notices.
  • Active – If the FBL handler account is active or inactive
  • Created – The time and date when the FBL handler account is created

Under the Actions

How can I edit an FBL handler?

You can select “edit” under the action menu to reach the edit page of a specific FBL handler account. Apart from the field of FBL email (reference), you’ll be able to edit and update the rest of the fields and preferences.

How can I delete the FBL handler?

If you want to delete one account, you will choose “delete” under the “Actions” menu of the specific account. And if you want to delete multiple accounts in one go, you’ll first choose the accounts to delete and then click delete from the action menu placed towards the right corner of the table.
